Operation Play Time - Cooking

Today's Operation Play Time challenge is getting into the kitchen and letting the children do some cooking. We all know that it's easier to do it ourselves but children do really enjoy it and as I've blogged before (for example on the Christmas Biscuits post) for incidental learning; using maths skills with the measuring, weighing and temperature and using literacy skills with reading and following the instructions. Mixing, rolling, cutting and icing are all great to help develop motor skills and as cooking encompasses all the senses it is great for sensory play.

Today we made Apple Crumble, which is a popular pudding in Britain, and as I'm dairy and gluten intolerant ours is a free from recipe!

Ingredients:
4 cooking apples
Mixed spice
50g/2oz Demarera sugar
50g/2oz Granulated sugar
100g/4oz Dairy free spread
150g/6oz Rice flour

Method:
Peel and cut the apples and cook them in a pan with a splash of water and some mixed spice (to taste - you can add sugar here if you want)
Mix the 'cumble' ingredients together until 'lumpy' (using fingers is great fun!)
Put the apple in a pyrex / casserole dish and cover with crumble mix.
Cook at about 180 degrees C/350 degrees F until golden brown.
Serve with custard / ice cream.

Any left? Apple crumble is my absolute favourite. We love to add bananas to ours.

Thanks for participating.

I love finding new recipes! I can't wait to try this one! Sammi left her apple outside and it froze (twice!) So we'll have to get more before we can get cooking. Thanks for sharing!
